Reeds ATG system

All the work?..... As we keep telling you, with the ATG system, it only takes a couple of minutes!!
Protect them from the environment, WHY?..... all you need to do is clean them and put them in their protective holders. Provided that you don't damage them, they will last for ages!!!!
Bell jars = Snake Oil.

This is a quote from a reed maker

Bernard Vandoren: "Cane, being a natural product, is likely to change when the weather and the hygrometrical conditions change. When just finished, a reed may have all of the required qualities, but this same reed, after a period of time, may no longer be acceptable due to external factors which might have modified it. A great American musician recently came to choose his reeds in Paris. When he returned home to the States, he did not find them to be the same as when he had tried them in Paris. The reeds had changed during his trip.

"Reeds are likely to be compared with wine. A wine, tasted at the harvest has certain qualities, which, during travel and time, will be altered. To be able to re-live those same sensations it is necessary to be in the same state you were in at the time of the tasting (sampling). A wine has to be tasted regularly, as it is sensitive to time and external factors. In the same way, an excellent reed will change with time and climate. And in order for the reed to reach its best, it has to be played regularly."

Not to protect them so much but keep them moist. He finds the best reeds, marks them in pen from 1 to say 10 and adds a tiny bit of water in the jar. This keeps them moist. If any reed breaks at a gig he knows theres working moist reeds in the jar.Simples.

I think the vacuum in the Bell Jar is also to keep his reeds at the correct humidity. But dont quote me on that one.

As I said, Snake Oil.
I didn't carry loads of reeds with me, just two ATG'd spare ones. If the reed in use became damaged, a quick dunk of the spare in liquid and I was in business.
Nowadays, I use an ATG'd Fibracell.... Perfecto!!!!!

Interesting you use the ATG with Fibracell,do you have problems finishing the tip area as per the ATG youtube video,as the Fibracell tips are thicker than normal cane reeds,i would have thought that it would have damaged the tip using the block on the edge of the reed.

No problems at all, it's just the same as with a cane reed.:thumb:

I did the last minor adjustments to my Legere Signature and am really enjoying playing with it now and the ease of it ......oh yes ....

i still slighly prefer the sound of cane and do use em at crtical times. To keep them from getting too dry they sit in a lavoz reed holder (4) in a plastic baggie and a wee bit of sponge dampened in whiskey. Not wet not dry just right.

You, Sir, are today's "Louche on the Loose" winner. Donated whisky for keeping reeds damp indeed. In a smoking jacket, with a cheroot, following a kedgeree breakfast no doubt. And on a Wednesday...
