Beginner Sax Arbiter pro sound... Taiwan.

just got myself a Arbiter pro sound sax, it stamped Taiwan and s/n 481296, someone said it was from about 1988 as it not stamped London... plays really well and I really like it a lot just wanting to know more about it as information seems very scarce...

Welcome to the Caff @bill_reed .

I've got quite a collection of old saxophone-related catalogues and flyers that I have picked up on my travels round music shops.

I can't remember where I collected a couple of colour glossy Arbiter things. One is a catalogue from 1995, celebrating 50 years "since a young Ivor Arbiter learnt the trade from the back room of a shop [in Soho] specialising in the repair of brass and woodwind instruments." The alto models in the catalogue are the "superb value" SAS565GLS and the "top of the range" WWX520LQ, but no prices are given.

The other item is an undated A4 flyer for Arbiter Pro Sound "jazz collection custom colours" showing a range of finishes including red, white and black. It says "prices from £719.00 RRP inc. VAT".

If you are interested in seeing the catalogue and/or flyer then start a Private Conversation and I could scan them for you.

Please forgive the thread resurrection...As a younger man I worked for Arbiter in their brass and woodwind department. I can tell you that the basic 'Pro Sound' saxes were pretty much anything but. They were fine as starter saxes go, pretty much bog standard in construction, made first in Taiwan, then China. The 'Jazz' models were a step up, made solely in Taiwan and the 'Jazz II' a step further still, double key arms etc. They were made in the same factory and to the same specs as other more expensive brands.
They are well worth getting if they're in good nick as the brand name puts people off and bargains can be had, in fact I have just bought one for a good price which will hopefully put my Grassi Alto into the eBay pile. Yes, this is partly nostalgia on my part but they were decent horns.
As an aside, while working there I also got to try possibly the world's worst sax, a demo model from a factory in Vietnam which played a semitone out Low C to middle C, I guess the wrong length neck, but it made for some fun 'Les Dawson' moments in the warehouse during lunch break.

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
