Hi!

I'm Lou and i play Alto and Soprano Sax.

I've been playing for 20 years and recently gained ABRSM Grade 8, merit, on Alto.

I've played with many wind bands and big bands and would now like to progress into other areas. I'd like to join a function/dance band but i'm finding it quite hard living in SW Cornwall as there don't seem to be many vacancies!
My other huge problem is also the fact that i can't improvise (or should i say i've never tried or have no experience of it). The one function band i found with a vacancy had no written music for a sax and wanted me to write my own parts, which i'm just not experienced in doing.

If i had the knowledge, i'd love to form my own sax quartet and jazz band.

Anyway, if there's anyone from cornwall or anyone with any advice, i'd love to hear from you.

Lou

I moved from Truro in 2004 so things will probably have changed (not too much?) since then. St ives Jazz club might be a good starting point for you. St Ives Jazz Club Home Page

Truro College have a big band http://www.trurocollege.ac.uk/jazz/big_band.htm

Hope these give you a starting point - welcome to the cafe :)

Welcome to the Caff Lou. Cornwall is great and we're off to visit the in-laws near Bude just after New Year.

I play alto and tenor in a function / covers band as do lots of other people here at the Caff. I have put together lots and lots of sax parts for many of the most popular party and dance songs of the last 50 years. If you do join a function band, then just ask here and I or someone else is pretty likely to have a usable sax part for most well known tunes.

Don't worry too much about improvising in the rock/pop/soul genres as most songs don't have solos or just a few bars. Where you do get a solo, you sometimes have to copy the original solo or just play some simple phrases based on pentatonic or blues scales.

All the best

Rhys
