My opinionated opinion is: get rid of vibrato and lipping to look for tuning, before it is too late.
Is that Ed's mouthpiece? You have a very deep sound with it.
Thanks Aldevis. By lipping, do you mean what I'm calling the swooping? If so, I agree, I can listen back and hear that it fits in some places, sparingly, but not in others, and I am making a conscious effort to control it!
The vibrato is something I've been trying to control for a while. I think one problem I have is that I use it a lot with the guitar, and so seem to have it automatically ingrained in me. I have managed now to make it more an act that I'm conscious of, which is a start, as I can now control it more. I must admit though, that with this piece I was deliberately using it more than I would usually, as I thought it would fit the piece.
When I visited Ed to try out different alto pieces, he laughed and said " what are you doing?" Turns out I was (unconsciously) shaking the sax to get vibrato as well as (consciously) using my blowing. This mechanical vibrato action is used on the guitar, and I didn't realise I was doing it with the sax as well. I think I've eliminated that now
Yes, the mouthpiece is my bronzite NYT, with a legere sig reed. I love it, and it's all I've played with since I got it back in summer. I was trying to get low and "fluffy" with this recording, and I think I've got the sound I was trying for.
