Mouthpieces Alto Sax Mouthpieces

I have been playing my alto (yamaha 275) with the standard 4C mouthpiece that it came with, on the recommendation of Sax.co.uk I bought an Otto Link Ebonite 5* and a Rovner ligature, when it came I was suprised that it seemed quite a bit smaller than the yamaha mouthpiece, I have tried it but it feels a bit "stuffy" for want of a better word!
Do mouthpieces vary a lot in size? Was this a bad choice do you think? Should I stick with the yamaha mouthpiece, I can't really afford to play this game!!!
I would appreciate any advice 🙂

I would expect a Link to sound stuffier than a Yamaha. Any idea why they recommended that? What sort of thing did you ask for?

Yes, mouthpieces do vary a lot in size.

Task nicely to them, tell them it's not what you asked for (in terms of sound) and ask them to change it for something more suitable. After all it was their recommendation.

But it might help if you get some clearer ideas from the forum.

Hi Jobylou

Know exactly where your coming from, been down this exact road myself, bought the exact same mpc and used it for quite some time then went off it and tried the yam 4c again and loved it, the only thing is now I feel tied to it and don't know where to go from here.
The mpc thing is a minefield and an expensive one too, the only thing I could say is if you really want to experiment try to get people you know to lend you there's, or if you feel confident and have a good local music shop they should let you try some out for yourself...good luck...john

I didn't really ask for anything, I said that I was thinking about changing my sax, they said to consider a change of mouthpiece instead and didn't ask me anything - just recomended that one

Thanks John, sadly no decent music shops near where we live 🙁 not sure I would be brave enough to play in a shop anyway lol 🙂

Then send it back, they should have discussed what you wanted, what you were expecting. Just sending somethign on spec and expecting you to keep it is nonsense.

Petes ligature vs reeds post further proves the point above. No matter what he uses, it still sounds like Pete!!!
I have a MkV1 and a PPT8*, but I don't and can't make it sound like him. I have tried, just to see, but failed miserably.

John.
