Ballad of the Month

Hi everyone.

Sorry for the delay. Trimmy has nominated me for this month's tune (even thought I've never actually contributed - I'll try to make amends).

So, the ballad for June is "Lover Man"

Materials from Chris:

Some recordings for inspiration (I couldn't find one with a particularly straight version of the head).

Nice pick 🙂.

We also did 'Lover Man' a few months ago on the other forum (SOTW). Here are two of my old takes, played on different horns, but with the same mouthpiece (Ponzol 120) and reed (La Voz medium).

The first take is a slower version with a backing of Chris, played on my 1950 Selmer SBA.
1. 'Lover Man' (SBA - Ponzol 120 - La Voz medium):

The second take is fast with a Youtube backing, played on a 1945 Buescher Aristocrat (borrowed from a friend).
2. 'Lover Man' - fast tempo (Aristocrat - Ponzol 120 - La Voz medium):

Hope to find some time for a new version later this month.

I enjoyed that Chris, thank you, especially the last chorus that had some lovely pieces of melody. It's a great choice, BigMartin.

I had a go at this today too, but gave up when my daughter started stomping around the kitchen in her noisiest princess shoes whilst playing harmonica and asking when tea was going to be ready.

Heres my 1st attempt of this number. I really wanted a sparse Blues feel. The Bird / Lady day versions are pretty much definitive for me which is a bit of a downer on the song I suppose.

@ Chris . Your little embellishments are really adding to the completeness of your work so all heading the right way . good to see your tone is holding up
@ Moose. As the others are saying you really are doing well. My only advice is that you might want to start thinking about what direction you want to go regarding playing in ensembles/band or whether like me you intend to remain a home player ( For The Moment anyway)

@ Mark, +1 to what the others have said, everything is going in the right direction and sounding good.
@ Clive, Well that was great. Loved the bass with the quiet drums. Very much in the 'Joe Henderson'/'Isfahan'
style. Thanks for the comments Clive, I still end up lost if I try and add to many embellishments though haha.

Chris..

Something is up with SoundCloud - I can get to the page but can't start or listen to Chris' or Mark's versions.

I did hear Clive's and liked it a lot. How did you make or where did you get that backing track ? I know that some Aebersold tracks have the bass panned hard over, so maybe you took just one side of the stereo and made it mono.

Rhys

Sorry about this but I had to have another go... This time using another of Chris' tracks and laying back on it a bit. Also tried playing softer and closer to the mic in an attempt to get a smoother tone. I think it worked.

Don't know why this BOTM feels so comfortable, maybe it's just me
