It's high summer here in NZ so I'm up in Auckland, & intend to busk down at the Viaduct today to kick the year off & will give "Shadow" a blow or three!

G'day Colin,

Haven't heard you for while, what always strikes me first is your recognisable tone and the speed of your vibrato. Amazing (to me) that a big bloke can have such a fast vibrato!

That's also a very nice backing & can imagine you out in the streets of Burnley busking sweetly along!
Good start to this months Ballad and the New Year....:thumb:

I had already done a backing track for this one and have been playing it a while. you'd think recording it would be a simple matter of click ,play, post. but no. It took quit a bit of fiddling around and retakes. It's always the easy ones that are the hardest.

2014 and just found the new BOTM... There's lots of those funny hashtags on this one. :eek: add to that the fact that I haven't practised for a couple of weeks now and I think you can expect me to turn in my usual stunning rendition in time for 2015
 
I just had a look at the above youtube clips, and looked at what keys they play this tune. The lead sheet key is G major.

The tenor sax players used Bb (dexter), D (koz), Ab (boots).
The alto/bari players used G (mulligan), Bb (Sadao Watanabe), and Ab (Lou Donaldson)

I would suggest making life a bit more friendly by upping it to Ab or Bb, which seem a popular keys, unless of course you relish the challenge in the standard key (especially on alto)! I mean if it's OK for Dexter to change the key to make life easier, then it's OK for us too!!:mrcool

Anyway, seeing how it's new year, I have just ADDED Bb con backing and sheets for tenor and alto, yes I did transpose the alto sheet down an octave. >:)Problem now is there is NO reason NOT to post a version.>:) Just added a Bb Bossa version..:cool:
 
ahhh, now that's better. Doesn't that tenor part look much nicer - same key as Dexter!:cheers:

PS. Just listened to CTB`s excellent and modern version.( I`ll re -listen on my studio machine later today ) This old laptop is chugging along but I find that I`m missing stuff as the scrolling aint too smooth and The music was stalling grr..

Rob, Easier on the eyes. More:),than:eek:. I use BiaB for the notation, I find easy to use if I have to enter melody lines, also midi files will notate without me doing anything;)
Clivey, The link works just fine, your playing also sounds good as always. I wonder how much your playing of the same tune has altered over time.

I've always played this in saxophone G. Bb for alto F for tenor. Why make life hard.

I first noticed it as a the theme from the Sandpiper. Jack Sheldon on trumpet. Music Oscar and a Grammy 1965

I like to listen to singers, rather than other saxophonists or instrumentalists. Tony Bennet had a hit with it back in the day but I never used to like his early stuff. Maybe he and I matured together and I like his recent stuff. Ella Fitzgerald is usually my first stop and maybe Sarah Vaughan and Frank Sinatra after that but for this one Astrud Gilberto's version is worth a listen.for some interesting phrasing.

Hi Rob,

That's a gift being able to tell which key it's in.... Any pointers/tips?

I like to put the YouTube into transcribe and play along, whatever key it's in, but of course the backing track determines that for us.
