Software Help Please! Band in a Box…Which One?

Hey everyone...
Thanks so much for helping out!
I really do appreciate all the great advice and the wisdom that comes with your years of experience.

I finally ended up doing what I really didn't want to do...I sprang for the Audiophile version.

It was a tough decision as Chris suggested that might be overkill and I really do respect his opinion and experience.

Since everyone seemed to agree that the RealTracks were important and once I went for the extra RealTracks it was really difficult not to go all the way.

However, I justified it - to myself at least - as I ended up getting the whole thing on a separate USB 3.0 Hard Drive.

Thanks - Jazzaferri - I heard that a lot from others too...the separate drive is what put me over the edge with that version.

I have plenty of space on my iMac (2TB) but at least this way it is portable and I didn't have to download anything.

I usually end up going on the cheap and I'm sorry later...at least this way I can experience the disappointment right away - chances are I'll get over it once I am able to install it and start using it.

I also justified that version as I shopped it to death all over the net and ended up getting it for $465 (usd) instead of the $669 (usd) as listed on their download site.

Again...thanks so much...and by the way...I'm sure a lot of other folks got a chance to experience your wisdom...So I'm really gad I ask the question even though I was aware that it had been asked before.

It is always amazing to me how many folks are reading the site who don't bother to register...

You Lookie Loos are really missing the boat...come on aboard! - You'll get the wisdom of the ages and just like me you'll end up meeting some really nice folks!

Thanks again so much!

One of the great challenges and joys is the ability to change the feel of a set of changes with such ease.

I used the trading 8s with a number of different "players" a lot. For anyone spending a lot of time on their own this is such a great tool. Really helps develop phrasing. For sax I often used guitar or harp (mouth) players to trade with. For guitar, sax or other horn players.

I’ve spent the last several days trying to figure out which BiaB version I need to buy…I searched and read every BiaB post here in the Cafe and it is still not clear to me where the breakeven point is with their four versions.

I'd be keen to hear what you went for in the end fastrack1 and how you got on with it.

I'm about to finally bite the bullet and buy BIAB myself and feel just as you did, completely confused about what to go for version-wise. So I'd really appreciate any advice from any experienced BIABers out there.

Are there any advantages/disadvantages re Mac v Windows versions?

I've got a MacBook with SSD memory but its pretty full, so would the version with BIAB on a USB memory avoid me having to take up too much footprint on the MacBook's "hard disk" for BIAB?

I want to use BIAB to create as realistic backing tracks as I can so I can use them to produce the best sounding demos of my original compositions as possible. I assume this makes the Real Tracks pretty much essential. Are there enough of them to provide sufficient diversity to avoid all my backings sounding painfully similar to one another?

Any thoughts/advice/recommendations would be much so appreciated.

Many thanks

Thomas, at one time the Mac version was always behind the Win version. A look on the website and it seems that they are both the same. As for which version??? Get the one with the most RT's or if you only are interested in one style of music then see if you can build a version using RT bundles. Their online chat can be very useful. If memory serves me right the base install still has to go on your PC but the RT's can stay on the external drive. Once again the online chat is your friend on that one.

Chris..

Thanks Chris - I knew I could rely on you to give me some useful guidance :) I have sent them a few questions on chat so its probably just a case of waiting until the US wakes up. Cheers, Thomas

Thomas, try around 17:00hrs PG are based in Canada. With it being live chat you'll get all the help you need there and then:)

I ended up going with the Audiophile version and I couldn't be happier with it...

I decided to go with it for all the reasons that Chris has talked about but the main reason was that the whole thing was on a separate disc and that is the way I wanted to use it...

I have several Mac's...iMac...and a couple of laptops...

I made a duplicate copy of the small drive they sent...with "SuperDuper" and ran it off that new drive...

That way I have the original drive and it won't get messed up under any circumstances...I have done several updates and it is a simple process to update the original drive and the "SuperDuper" copy as well...

I have Windows but I just like running "Music" stuff on my Macs...

Hope this helps!

Charles

Thanks Charles, very helpful yes :) And will look up "SuperDuper" as I don't know it.

And will look up "SuperDuper" as I don't know it.

I think it is the best solution to backups on a Mac and it's saved my Bacon on several occasions...and quite a deal at $27.95...all you have to do is loose all your data one time to wish you had invested that little amount on a sure fire backup.

SuperDuper!

I always use it to create a "clone" of all my drives...in addition to "TimeMachine"

SuperDuper also works in a "smart" mode by only updating the changed files on an external Clone...

I have also used it when getting a new machine up and running as it is super easy to migrate an old system to a new one with an identical "clone" drive...

Thanks Charles, I'll try to find it.

Meanwhile, I did get a reply back from the BIAB people who confirm that BIAB 2017 is available for Win and Mac and the only real difference is that on Windows it includes RealBand "which is a secondary DAW" they say.

I'm not sure what a "secondary" DAW is (I use Reaper) so just wondered if anyone has used RealBand and finds it worth having, or more to the point if it would be enough to justify choosing the Windows version of BIAB over the Mac one?

@Profusia - If you have a Mac, then you can use GarageBand as a DAW. I believe it is essentially a simplified version of Logic Pro. I use it and find it fine.

Thanks Nigel, I already use Reaper on my Macbook and find it fine. Just wasn't sure if this RealBand secondary DAW thing was something I should know about and consider.

If that is the version you are most comfortable getting (and you can afford it) that is the one you should have but the UltraPlusPack ALSO comes pre-loaded on a hard-drive. I picked up the latest (2017-Windows) UltraPP after not having upgraded since my 2009 version. I think I bought my first BIAB back in 2003 or 4. Great program and does everything I need it for and more, you'll be glad you got it. :)
