It's equally possible that in the UK the party that wins the election receives fewer votes than the second party.In the U.S. we have an antiquated system in which each state is allotted a certain number of electoral votes. These go to the candidate who gets the majority of the votes in each state. There have been a number of times in our history when a candidate gets enough electoral votes to win the election, but the losing candidate gets a larger number of "popular votes". In the past election, Hillary Clinton received almost 3 million more votes than Donald Trump but lost the election because she had fewer electoral votes. If that doesn't make sense to you, you have lots of company.
