French elections

In the U.S. we have an antiquated system in which each state is allotted a certain number of electoral votes. These go to the candidate who gets the majority of the votes in each state. There have been a number of times in our history when a candidate gets enough electoral votes to win the election, but the losing candidate gets a larger number of "popular votes". In the past election, Hillary Clinton received almost 3 million more votes than Donald Trump but lost the election because she had fewer electoral votes. If that doesn't make sense to you, you have lots of company.
It's equally possible that in the UK the party that wins the election receives fewer votes than the second party.

By the way. It was just the presidential election. In June we have the 'Législatives' to elect the députées standing at the French assembly. But that assembly also defines the government. So if it doesn't agree with the elected President's choice for prime minister, the assembly can vote against the government and have it replaced by one to it's liking.

The fun ain't over yet. With a new president that's not in the traditional parties, it's difficult to predict the next elections results.

Every UK government I can remember since the late 70s has received significantly fewer than 50% of votes cast. All those "landslide" election victories in the 80s and 90s actually put in place governments that the majority had not voted for. It will almost certainly happen again in June 2017 and be hailed as "strong government". The fact that it will not be representative is taken as read.

If every body who can vote did, then maybe the result would be different. Apathy is the problem. Politics is a game for politicians. Voters just get in the way. >:).

I think if there was a box on the ballot paper that said "none of the above, a plague on all their houses" that would probably win a majority.

As well as apathy there is the issue of disenchantment.

No doubt some clever .... would change their name by deed poll.

I just blew away all that nonsense with a few notes on my horn tonight! :D

Even if I didn't play well. I blame a weak reed for it! It felt better than any political debate. :)

Best suggestion I've heard all year :)

My friend told me that, apparently the percentage of non voters is greater than the percentage for any single party. That's all well and good I told him, but what about the married ones?
