Thank you for pointing out that article. I have watched all his videos on that site, but have overlooked this good information. I played a Rousseau 4 for classical work for many years, and since have gone to the Rousseau 5 since it allows for a bit wider range of dynamics with a slightly larger tip opening. I think the "pop" test has more to do with the reed than the mouthpiece, but my younger students really dig it when I teach them that.

Glad to help someone of your level and learning @jbtsax. I have connected to Rousseau on Facebook and also bought an alto 5 moutpiece. Very very good mpc. Does all that I am capable of on my Martin!

Pop tests only work on narrow facings. You won't have much luck getting a 3 reed to pop on a 125 tenor mouthpiece however good it is.

You have to really suck to be able to do that.

Crackle test - with the reed on the m/p move thumb briskly across the tip of the reed after a few strokes it should make a crackling sound.
Snap test - remove the reed from the m/p, placing thumbs at the middle and fingers at the edges very carefully snap the reed lengthways, replace on m/p, it should now not play.
