Hey Pete [and all] Sorry but loads of visits are from me (at least) because - If I read more than a few posts the site logs me out and I have to log in again ... and again ... to read more ...

So in a typical night - I login at least a half a dozen times [every day and sometimes more than that] ... that's just to read about 15 or so posts ...

Now - I know that I always open post in a new window - rather than click the post link and have then to go back a page .... but hey mate - that's quite normal in forums ...

Is there a way extend the time a member can browse without the site terminating the login?

I ain't complaining ... just thought you ought to know that this is affecting your stats ...

PS - I don't think I have ever completed a post or reply to a post without being logged out for inactivity ... [perhaps I am slow on the ole keypads ... lmao

This isn't happening to me, so I don't thin it's a forum setting. What is happening is that if the machine crashes and IE has the forum open, it loses my login status. Perhaps it's the way you use your web browser.

There are no settings active in the forum software which would cause this, having logged in and ticked the remember box you should be logged in permanently on that browser (unless you log out).

There is possibly some setting on your browser (to do with cookies?) that is causing this. However I will do some research on what the issue could be.

I am logged in on Safari, and I stay logged in even after closing down and rebooting the computer every day, I never have to log in. This is the way it should work.

You'll probably need to stop clearing cookies, otherwise that will force you out.

I think so to. I've found different browsers work differently with cookies. On safari I just stay logged in all the time, on Fire I have to click on login each time I reboot the computer (but don't have to reenter my login details).

I wouldn't worry about clearing cookies every time you log out.

I don't ever clear cookies while I am logged in ...

I am set to "clear all cookies" Only when I exit the browser ...

When I wish to re-open this site my details are remembered and all I need do is click login ...

The point is that while logged in using Firefox - after a short period "say while I am typing a reply to someone [or if I am distracted for a few minutes]. That's when I get forced out ...

I don't see why my clearing cookies on exiting the browser has any association to the problem. There seems to be a setting somewhere that reacts if I am inactive on the Main Search Unread Posts Page - I usually open posts in a new page thus don't alter the front Unread posts page ...

It doesn't seem to occur if I click links to posts and then have to use back arrow to return to the Unread posts page ...

Oh ... If you are wondering why I open in a new window each time it's because I don't loose the unread posts page which drops the post once it has been accessed ...

    Cheers

Yes, that's is should happen, but I wonder what happens if you try setting to not clear cookies. Does it still happen? This would be useful for me to know before I ask technical support at vBulletin

BTW, you can use "Todays Posts" which does not drop the viewed threads.

I have set cookies to remain until they expire Pete ... I will keep you informed ...

Note: I was forced out while replying to this post prior to altering the cookie setting ... Just a matter of 3 or 4 minutes ...

Ref: Today's posts ... Yep! Roger that! ... I only use it if I have read a post and want to return to it ...

EDIT: I have just had to sign in again because I was logged out by the Ghost of ??? Gawd knows who ... lmao

So - The original [This post was 1:50 PM - I Re-logged in at 02:11 [21 minutes I lasted that time]

Are you able to try other browsers? Chrome or Safari?

I guess I could - But Internet Explorer has not logged me out - so it does appear to be a firefox thing ...

I don't understand why I get logged out but I don't hear the same problems from other Firefox users ...

Well that didn't solve it ...

I got forced out using Internet Explorer ...

I had left it with me signed in and gone off for tea n buiscuits - on my return - yep! you guessed it ... Signed out ... Bums ...

It doesn't happen on other websites - I often visit and remain loged in [and inactive] for long periods ...

In fact I don't think it's ever happened elsewhere ...

    Could it be a windows7 64 issue? - I wonder ?

I maybe completely wrong here but have you clicked the check box when you sign-in that says remember me? If I don't do that I get logged out after a short period of time on any web browser including IE, Firefox, Chrome and Safari.

    Hey Hey Paul ...

Yep I have that checked - although you may be on the money there ... Because I have noticed that the function [check box] doesn't work at all times and seems flakey ...

But why would we be signed out [for inactivity] - surely it should leave us alone all the time we are logged in ... and only forget us if we signed out ...

PS I am using Explorer for now and I am still signed in after about an hour ...
