Default Record from DVD player to PC

    Hi

I was trying to record a backing track from DVD player directly to my PC using Audacity. It was OK but then the quality of the music is terrible. Everything seems to be out of proportion. The music is explosive and the bass is too strong.

I connected my PC directly to the DVD player.

The music is perfecly fine if it goes through a TV.

Can anyone help?? Do i need something else between the DVD player and my PC to make it sounds right?

    Cheers

    Hi Tommy,

Is the backing track on a DVD or CD? The reason I ask is that if it's on a CD then pop the CD into the PC and grab yourself a copy of iTunes if you've not already got it, and then import the CD, much easier and probably better quality.

If the only way is to link up the DVD player and the PC then ensure you are plugged into the line input not mic input. From your description of the quality you were getting I'd suspect you were going into the mic input, or you need to adjust the recording level.

    Hope that helps,

    Chris

    Hi Christ

Thank you so much for the advice.

It is a karaoke VCD. I need to play it from a DVD player in order to "shut down" the vocal, leaving only the backing track.

I was not aware of line input and mic input. I probably chosed mic input and that might have caused the problem. I will try again with line input and see how it goes.

    Cheers

    Tom.

I know nothing about karaoke DVDs but... if they are like DVDs.... open with your PC the folder (explore) and within all the files you will find individual tracks, and for the track one with & one without...

I did look at the folders but couldn't get my head around at all. Say there are 12 tracks, there is only one folder with 12 .dat files. It also comes with other folders with just a few files, probably those are supporting files?? I couldn't find those "backing track" from any folder!

Tommy are you using Windows XP or Vista? With Windows XP, you can simply play the DVD on your PC directly and record using the System Mixer as the recording source for Audacity. This records the exact sound that would go to your speakers. Microsloth disabled this feature in Vista, although there are work-arounds for some soundcards.

Using the Mixer Toolbar with Audacity

    Pete's right,

I may be many things and have been called by many different names but I'm not the Messiah!
