Ligatures In need of a good, robust single-screw metal tenor ligature. What are people's preferences?

I have used virtually exclusively a rovner platinum (do have a marc jean which is now just a backup) for the last 4 years and it is the most robust metal ligature I have ever used and looks exactly the same as when I first bought is (as a relatively cheap but very good looking stop gap!). It...

    Reeds Cane vs synthetic

Apologies you are correct the problem seemed to occur when the legeres are stored in reed holders designed for cane reeds. I actually had the problem using the rico reed holder which is why I started leaving the reed on the mouthpiece

    Reeds Cane vs synthetic

The Legere reed I have used for the past year has a slight bend on the tip as I used to press the tip against the mouthpiece to check alignment. I always leave the legere on the mouthpiece yet I have found the bend at the tip makes not a jot of difference to the sound, in fact I would advise not...

    Reeds Cane vs synthetic

I have had the same legere signature reed for over year now and is as responsive as the day I bought it. I found out some time ago that putting them in the freezer over night every couple months or so prevents the issue. I never notice any fatigue.

    Reeds Cane vs synthetic

I never think about reeds anymore, it just stays on the sax (apart from cleaning) and I play, simple as that. I spent some years going between various cane and legere reeds, normally because I thought the canes sounded more refined but kept going back to the Legere reeds when I was playing...

    Tone Help for longtime excercie

20 minutes a day playing just playing long notes sounds a bit excessive to me especially if you are a relative beginner. I had a similar problem when I was less experienced and obsessed with long tones. I eventually stopped playing for a while in frustration, when I eventually went back I...

Saxophones How much difference is there between brands?

Because they put in the hours of practice and dedication together with a drive to just play music. They may well have started with a different (probably cheaper) setup, but their drive to improve together with phenomenal technique, meant they could try out different setups to fine tune their...

Beginner My reed flutters when I hit certain notes

Are you sure the reed is not split?

Beginner Reed position - beginners query

With you there Wade I also use synthetic reeds (Legere Signature) exclusively. I take apart sax every time and clean every part , then put sax back together with reed in place (exactly as Mandy says - trying to 'measure' a small gap is a waste of time and compromises the versatility of the...

    PPT and JUMBO JAVA squeak

No I use the Rovner Platinum on the Morgan Fry Jazz + mouthpiece as I can get more power and better easier low notes, so seems a better fit for this mouthpiece . But I found the Marc Jean was a very good fit for the PPT (I believe it was actually a specific model for the PPT). I did also buy a...

Ligatures What ligature should I buy?

a rovner platinum will also adapt. look much prettier! And save you a lot of money. I stopped using the latest Marc Jean lig because the platinum (which I,d bought because it was pretty and relatively cheap)was significantly better for the Morgan Fry Jazz + mouthpiece I use

    Reeds Synthetic reeds

After much frustration with cane reeds in Australia, possibly due to humidity. I have reverted back to Legere signature 2.5 tenor reeds. They play immediately (I always leave the reed on the mouthpiece) and are incredibly consistent. And to boot they sound to me superior to La Voz, RJS...

Mouthpieces Leaving mouthpiece on the neck cork

Since sticking to legere reeds only I thoroughly clean and disinfect the mouthpiece, reed and and crook, then dry and put everthing together and replace on the saxophone. This stops the legere reed from splitting and means the sax is always ready to play. Replacing the cork eventually is not a...

    Ligatures Ligatures don't matter?

With regard to reed placement I have found the best advice came from Mr Runyon. I position the reed so that when I push the reed tip against the Mouthpiece it exactly aligns with the mouthpiece tip, this to me makes obvious sense and is much easier to achieve, I also ensure that the reed is...

    Ligatures Ligatures don't matter?

I also use Legere Signatures as they work much more effectively than cane reeds here in the humid warm weather of Sydney. I am using a Morgan Fry Jazz + mouthpiece and use a Rovner platinum ligature to secure the Legere reed as it was going cheap at the time. I recently however ordered a Marc...
