Please don't apologise, I've not come across Wilton Felder and I'm really pleased to have seen that video, thanks. So is that a Berg and a Yamaha he's playing?

Yes, Wilton is great. That's also one of my favourite bass lines, what a groove.

Looks like a Berg, and my vote would be for a King, it's definitely not a Yamaha.

Yep, my mistake, definitely not a Yamaha, I'll have to look up 'Kings' as I know nothing about them. It's a wonderful baseline.

The giveaway is the conical shaped keycups.

Hi Chris,
I believe he was a bass player and then on sax became one of the founder members with 'The Jazz Crusaders', later to become simply 'The Crusaders'. So that is Wilton on the ever popular Street Life solo.
A hat full of recordings there then!
I have a few Wilton Felder solo albums but the one that absolutely typifies what I love about his style has to be 'Inherit the wind'
I was introduced to it about 18 years ago and some of the recording effects on the album seemed a little dated then, but his soul just comes right out and grabs ya!
These days, I don't even notice those effects and can't ever imagine his playing sounding dated or stale.

Interesting thought Rhys,
In my ignorance I had ASSuMEd it was just a late super 20 neck. I have seen some super 20's auctioned that were later models and came with ordinary over slung octave levers. Further more some weren't even silver, but now I'm all sketchy on the on the facts.
 
Nice sax and clip.

In the early 60's King dropped the underslung octave key and the neck got a brace. I guess that was a collaboration with the SML company. And they also dropped the double socket at that time.

Clarence is with a King Super 20 from the 50's on the "Born To Run" sleeve. But on all performances I've seen from 70's to 2009 he had been first on Selmer Mk VI tenor with a reforced neck (brace) with Berg Larsen and later Keilwerth with Rovner Deep-V. You can quite often see a Selmer neck with a brace. Maybe CC blew a King Super 20 on clubgigs. CC played Yamaha soprano and bari.

Excellent player Wilton Felder - I have this concert on DVD. During the 1970s Wilton did a lot of sessions as a bass player, playing on albums by Steely Dan, Michael Franks, Seal & Crofts, etc. With the Crusaders played bass and saxes in the studio, but sax on gigs with sub bass players like Roger Popwell, Alphonso Johnson and Freddie Washington. I have quite a few Crusaders albums, also Wilton's solo stuff and some Wayne Henderson. Played Aria basses in the late 70s and Yamaha saxes in the 80s and 90s. On Tina Turner's Private Dancer album the Crusaders back Tina on a cover version of a Beatles tune with Wilton on bass and sax.

I think this tune has caught my soul somehow, it's never that far away and it comes so readily into my mind, to me it is simply beautiful.

I've decided I'm going to learn Wilton Felder's part, I've never transcribed anything before so it's going to be interesting, but I can't think of a better tune to start on, it's a tune I'd love to have ingrained in me.
