  1. Losing sax 'mojo'

by on 2nd September 2010 at 07:56 AM (Nick's Trials and Tribulations)
This is a bit similar to Phil's earlier post. I've had a spell of complete disillusionment (is that a word?) with the saxophone. A few weeks ago I was practising BlueBerry Hill and was trying to get a particular section nailed that I was having trouble with when I played it within the piece. I spent about 45 minutes going over and over the section, then the whole piece, then the section again, etc., until I could do it reasonably well. When I went downstairs I got a good old moaning at from the ...
  2. Glissando, Concert and Grades.

I've been thinking a bit about a solo piece at our next concert and fancied having a go at a couple of Rock 'n Roll numbers. I've decided on 'Blueberry Hill' and 'Green Door' from my Take the Lead Rock 'n Roll book.

I've been practising these a lot over the past couple of weeks and my wife is now fed up with them, so I'm only running through each one once every other practise session. That should give me enough practise before the concert in December!

    I've also decided ...
  3. Triplets

I've been going through the songs in my Take the Lead:Rock'n'Roll book with a view to doing one or two pieces from that at the next Windsor Community Orchestra's concert in December (plenty of time to practise!!). I decided that Blueberry Hill was probably the easiest, so spent a couple of days practising that until I could do a reasonable rendition (my son recognised it anyway!!)

Last night I had a lesson with Rhona and played said piece for her - naturally I didn't do it as well ...
  4. Off to Puerto Rico!!

Had my last orchestra rehearsal last night before the concert in two weeks time. I won't be playing at all for the next week as I'm off to Puerto Rico tomorrow - yippee!!!!

I got my Pie Jesu backing CD off Rhona on Wednesday and had a play-along with that, but my CD player doesn't have a very high maximum volume and I was having trouble hearing the track properly. I think when I get back from holiday I'll have to have practise downstairs on the main hi-fi (If I can get the wife to ...
  5. Speed and Fingers

One of the pieces I've been practising is a Tenor/Alto duet that Rhona has given me to try. At my lesson last week she said I was getting there with the tune, but it was supposed to be much faster! As homework, she's given me 'The Can Can' to try, "to get my fingers working".

Having done some digging in the garden for the wife this afternoon, I said I was going upstairs to do some saxophone practise. "The Can Can", says I. "Yes, I heard yesterday", says ...
